Gun Lock Program Helps Keep Children Safe

Posted

For the past five years, local law enforcement agencies have been part of a program to encourage gun safety.

The Warsaw Police Department and the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department are participants in Project ChildSafe.

Project ChildSafe provides free cable-style locks and educational flyers to Kosciusko County law enforcement offices in hopes of making homes safer. The locks are available at no charge to anyone who wants them.

All local law enforcement agencies have to do to be part of the project is request the locks and make them available for the public. Information included with the gun locks encourages gun owners to prevent loaded guns from getting into the hands of children to prevent accidents.

"(The gun locks) are provided at no cost to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department," said Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine. "We apply for them and they send them free of charge."

Anyone interested in the gun locks should stop by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department or the Warsaw Police Department to pick them up.

In 2004, residents in Indiana received 403,700 gun locks, and 275,000 more gun locks are expected to be distributed in Indiana in 2005.

Project ChildSafe is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice and is available in all 50 states. In the current cycle, more than 12 million free firearm safety kits will be distributed throughout the U.S. The previous cycle saw more than 20 million safety kits distributed last year.
