Gun Involved In Battery IncidentA Warsaw man is facing several domestic battery charges after allegedly battering a woman while in possession of a gun and with children present.
Davante Jerrell Gunn, 27, of 340 E. Levi Lee Road, lot 94, Warsaw, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 11:16 a.m. Monday for battery with a deadly weapon and on a warrant. His bond was set at $100,000 surety and $750 cash.
Court documents filed Wednesday list the charges against him as domestic battery while armed with a deadly weapon, a level 5 felony; domestic battery with a child under 16 present, a level 6 felony; and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor with an enhancement to make it a level 6 felony. Gunn was previously convicted of domestic battery in St. Joseph County on Feb. 11, 2014.
On Monday, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Don McCune responded to a domestic battery complaint. When he arrived, he spoke with the mother of the victim who said she wasn’t sure where her daughter was at this time. McCune drove around the trailer park and found the victim sitting in a van. When he approached the victim, she said she had been battered by Gunn.
The victim said while she was preparing to leave in the van, Gunn came out of nowhere and got in on the passenger side. Also in the van were four children.
When Gunn entered the van, he removed a black and silver handgun from his pocket and placed it on his lap, telling the victim the safety was off, according to court documents.
While driving the children to school, Gunn became angry and told the victim to pull the van over. She stopped the van and Gunn started hitting her on the head and face. He took possession of the van keys, the victim’s cellphone and got out of the van. He also took one of the children with him.
McCune talked with another one of the children who said when Gunn got in the van, he had a black and silver gun.
McCune and deputy James Smith found Gunn and the child at a residence.
