Grow Up

Editor, Times-Union:

It seems as though all I hear about lately is vandalism, violation and violence.

Dumpster fires, fires in stores, break-ins, broken windows and fights.

One question. Where's the respect? Whether this is done by minors or adults, the reality is these people are most definitely not looking at the big picture. Maybe it's fun and games to those doers, but a monetary loss for those victims and our economy is taking its toll on all of us. If the person knows the price of a dollar and knows the sweat of some hard work, hopefully, they would choose not to do something like that.

Why not make yourself useful and help someone do yard work or go grocery shopping for an elderly person? Go to the park and play with kids. Do something constructive, not destructive.

We talk about society making a bad influence on children. Well, get a reality check, people. We are our society. We make it and break it.

If we would grow up, and I don't just mean get a job, pay bills and drive a car, I mean act like an adult. Behave like a dog who's been through obedience school. Know your manners. Always put the other person first. Put out a helping hand. Think of the long run. Ask yourself what's next. If you wouldn't run home and tell your children or parents what you did, or scream it out in the middle of town, don't do it. Always remember, one day you have to face your past, and history isn't something you can change. We have to make a brighter future by changing today.

If you have one person who looks up to you, or comes to you for advice, you are a hero. Don't take advantage of that. Take a deep breath into responsibility and head up with open eyes. Pointing someone in the right direction is the best way to get there yourself.

Statistics are high because our efforts are low. Our world is such a different place than it was 100 years ago. Let's make it a better place for the next 100.

Maybe this is little Warsaw, Ind., but I feel like it's a pretty good place to be at right now considering.

If you are glad to be here, show it.
