Several community groups are again giving everyone in the area, no matter what their circumstances, a reason to give thanks this year.
Warsaw Elks Lodge 802 will serve its annual free Thanksgiving dinners at Center Lake Pavilion for the 18th consecutive year. Turkey or ham and all the trimmings will be dished out from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 27, with carry-outs and deliveries for anyone who can't come to the pavilion.
Last year the Elks served about 580 dinners, said organizer Jim Baker, which included nearly 180 carry-outs and deliveries. Volunteers cooked 32 turkeys, 18 gallons of green beans, 16 gallons of yams and 80 pounds of ham. They also served 75 pies.
Volunteers last year, including members and nonmembers, numbered approximately 100.
The Elks Lodge accepts donations at the dinner or before, and also takes contributions of paper goods, pies or other items used in serving the dinner.
Anyone interested in more information about the dinner or about deliveries should call the Elks after 3 p.m. at 267-7802.
Food baskets will be distributed in time for Thanksgiving by Mentone's Helping Hands starting at 2 p.m. Nov. 25. The baskets are for families in need in the Tippecanoe Valley school district.
Donations for the baskets are always welcomed by Helping Hands, and anyone wishing to make a donation should take it to Niff-Tone Dist., or call 353-7701.
American Table Restaurant will continue its tradition of offering free Thanksgiving dinners to patrons who are over 60 years of age. Complete dinners, with a choice of turkey or ham, will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; diners who qualify for free meals pay only for their drinks.
Call American Table Restaurant at 267-8171 for more information.
Another annual tradition, North Webster's American Legion Post 253, will again offer its annual complimentary Thanksgiving dinner at the Post from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 27. As with the Elks, the meal is free to anyone who wants to attend.
Deliveries for shut-ins are available with advance arrangements, and carry-outs will be available Thanksgiving Day. Donations of cash or canned goods are always accepted by the Legion, with the canned goods distributed at Christmas.
