Posted
MILFORD - A Milford Middle School student was suspended Monday after he reportedly took a non-functioning hand grenade to school.

According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, the 14-year-old student allegedly had the device in his backpack when a teacher saw it.

Kosciusko County Sheriff's Deputy and Wawasee School Resource Officer Derek Kreider inspected the hand grenade and quickly determined that is was non-functioning.

It is not illegal to possess such items, however, it is against the Wawasee Community School Corp.'s policy.

The student told police that a member of his family recently purchased the device at a local gun and knife show and then gave it to the boy as a present. The teen said he was playing with the grenade in the woods over the weekend, put it in his backpack and forgot to take it out before he went to school Monday morning.

The boy reportedly showed the grenade to another student while on the way to school. That student then told school officials about the device.

The student who was in possession of the grenade on school property was suspended from school.
