Gregory Rex WithamMENTONE – Gregory Rex Witham, 69, passed away peacefully Friday, May 17, 2019, at his residence in Valparaiso.
Greg was born in Mentone, Ind., to Rex and Freeda Witham on Aug. 14, 1949. He spent many memorable times on the farm with his sisters, Turnip the dog, Sam the pony and kittens galore.
Greg was a 1967 graduate of Triton High School in Bourbon, Ind., then obtained a bachelor of science in industrial management from Purdue University in 1972.
Upon graduation Greg joined Indiana Information Controls (IIC), which is now Computer Services Inc. (CSI) of Valparaiso. With his strong work ethic, attention to detail, open-door policy and good humor, he worked his way up through the ranks. He retired in 2016 as a software engineer group leader after 44 years of service – the same year the Cubs won the World Series.
With his dad as best man and family in attendance, Greg married Jennifer Sue Pyle, who was also from Mentone, at his home in Valparaiso on April 5, 1986. During this six years together, they shared a great love and many wonderful times. Jennifer passed away from cancer on Nov. 27, 1992, and though their marriage was short lived, Greg’s love for Jennifer remained until his death.
Greg was a member of the Vale Church of Christ in Valparaiso and the Mentone Church of Christ. His lifetime membership was served as a song leader, attendant at the Lord’s table, as well as preaching the word of God from the pulpit.
Greg was a fan of the Boilermakers, the Cubs and the Bears. He loved TV shows, movies and music of all kinds. To his family and friends, Greg was a model of quiet reserve and dry humor. He will be greatly missed.
Greg is survived by his father, Rex Witham, Mentone; his sisters, Caleen “Susie” Rentschler, Mentone; Janie and husband, Eric Gard, Carmel, Ind.; Sally and husband, Jay Hearn, St. Charles, Ill.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Greg was preceded in death by his wife, Jennifer Witham; his mother, Freeda Witham; and an infant sister, Carol.
Visitation hours will be 1 to 3 p.m., followed by the memorial service, at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, at King Memorial Home, Mentone, with Kent Jones, minister, Mentone Church of Christ, officiating.
The place of burial is the Mentone Cemetery following the memorial service.
