The trial of a Winona Lake man accused of attempted murder started this morning with jury selection.
Eric V. Graves, 37, Winona Lake, will stand trial in Kosciusko County Circuit Court this week on two counts of attempted murder.
According to police, Graves arrived at the Etna Green home of Carl Wireman April 14 and threatened him and his family's life.
After a struggle between Graves and Wireman, one in which Graves allegedly produced three firearms, Graves shot himself outside the Wireman home.
Wireman, who was a paramedic at the time, then performed first aid on Graves until police and EMS arrived. Graves was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital, where he was in critical condition for an extended period of time.
Graves was finally arrested May 29 on a charge of attempted murder, and his bond was set at $500,000.
Graves is being represented by Warsaw lawyer and former Wabash County Judge Daniel J. Vanderpool.
The same day Graves was arrested, Vanderpool's request to waive an initial hearing was granted. The court cited the waiver was issued in part because of Graves' medical condition.
Circuit Court Judge Rex Reed recused himself from the case that day, and it was given to Judge Duane Huffer, who will preside over the three-day trial.
