MARION – Junior Trey Stoll was the medalist in Grace College’s first men’s golf tournament of 2012, as his total of 144 won the Indiana Wesleyan Unviervsity Invitational at Meshingomeshia Country Club.
Stoll, a former Tippecanoe Valley player who later transferred to Rochester, was in fifth place after turning in a score of 74 on the first day. He steadily charged up the leaderboard in the final day of action, however, firing a second-round 70 to win the individual medal by one stroke.
The Lancers finished seventh out of 10 teams overall. After mostly struggling with a 321 in the first round, Grace’s 310 on Tuesday allowed the team to finish ahead of fellow Crossroads League opponents Huntington, Mount Vernon Nazarene and Saint Francis. Holy Cross College won the event as a team.
Caleb Rovenstine, a Valley grad, fired a two-day total of 157 for the Lancers. He shot a 75 Monday, which was the eighth-lowest total in the first round.
Taylor Fanning had a dramatic turnaround for Grace. He shot 89 in the first round, but lowered his score by 13 strokes (76) to finish with 165.
Former Warsaw standout Kal Denlinger carded an 85-82 to round out Grace’s scoring.
With the win, Stoll has been the medalist at three tournaments for the Lancers since last fall.
The Lancers will next compete in the Holy Cross Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Warren Golf Course.
