MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – Grace College’s men’s basketball team eclipsed 100 points for the second straight game to open the season in a 110-82 rout of Wilberforce on Friday. The Lancers’ game on Friday night helped open up Mount Vernon Nazarene’s new gym, Ariel Arena, at the Crossroads Classic at MVNU. Six players reached double-digit scoring for the NAIA Division II 16th-ranked Lancers (2-0), including 18 points, four rebounds and three assists from former Whitko High School standout and NCAA Division I transfer Logan Irwin. Grace made 56 percent of its field goals and drilled eight 3-pointers to make short work of Wilberforce. Within the first 12 minutes of tip-off, Grace opened up a 24-point lead at 44-20 over the Bulldogs. Despite Wilberforce making six treys in the first half, the Lancers still held a 64-48 advantage at the intermission. The Lancers led by as many as 31 points in the second half, substituting freely over the final minutes. Fifteen players saw action for Grace, with 12 of them scoring at least one point. Greg Miller finished with 17 points and six rebounds, Brandon Vanderhegghen netted 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, and Niko Read made a trio of 3-pointers en route to 13 points. Adrian Makolli had 10 points and six boards in his first career start, Kyle Fillman produced 13 points off the bench, and Brock McFarland tallied eight points, six assists and three steals. In their impressive first half, the Lancers made 24 field goals on 63-percent shooting, including 5 of 9 from beyond the arc. Grace’s output of 110 points was the team’s highest since ripping off 129 points against Ohio-Eastern in 2010. The Lancers will wrap up the Crossroads Classic at MVNU when they face Akron-Wayne on Saturday at 1 p.m.
