Grace Takes Care Of Ball, BusinessWINONA LAKE – With an emphatic putback dunk early in the second half Tuesday evening, sophomore Logan Godfrey capped off a 7-0 run and gave Grace College's men's basketball team a 27-point lead over Cincinnati Christian University. It was just one of many highlights for the Lancers, who beat the visiting Eagles 92-67 at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center and improved to 6-1 on the season. The 6-foot-7 Godfrey, a former standout at Fort Wayne Snider High School, led a balanced Grace College effort with 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior Tre Olive tallied 15 points in an ultra efficient performance that included a 5-of-6 effort from the field and a 5-of-7 effort from the charity stripe. Junior Stephen Halstead, Godfrey's high school teammate, made four three-pointers and a free throw en route to 13 points, and junior Erik Bowen had yet another double-double, this time with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Grace was 11 of 19 from three-point range, 17 of 20 from the free throw line, and dished out 22 assists. The stat that veteran coach Jim Kessler was most happy with, however, was that the Lancers only committed 14 turnovers in 90-plus possessions. “We only had 14 turnovers, that was key,” said Kessler, who notched his 749th career win in his 40th season with the Lancers. “Our goal is 13 or less. “You can’t turn it over. If you don’t turn it over it makes things a lot easier. You can’t shoot a turnover.” Freshman Jaret Sons scored nine points in the win, while junior and former Tippecanoe Valley standout Chad Hoffer and sophomore Tim Swanson, a Warsaw product, chipped in with eight and seven points, respectively. Eleven players checked into the game for Grace, with nine of them scoring. The Lancers led 48-28 at halftime and the Eagles never threatened in the second half. “The first five minutes is the most important for us at this point,” Kessler said when asked about starting the second half with a 7-0 run and putting the Eagles away. “We didn’t want to let things get away, so we tried to stay with what we needed to do. We pretty much dominated every category.” Cincinnati Christian fell to 2-4 on the season. Janeel Frith led the Eagles with a game-high 19 points, while Khari Burton scored 13 points. Jadon White and Kobe Brown scored nine and eight points, respectively, in the loss while K.C. Kamentz chipped in with seven. Grace is in action again Friday at 8 p.m. when it hosts Grace Bible College as part of the Terry Polston Hoops For Hope Tournament. There will be four men’s and four women’s teams in action both Friday and Saturday. Money raised from the games will be donated to the K21 Health Foundation and its cancer care fund.
