TERRE HAUTE — With the game tied 2-2 in Grace’s final at-bat, Samantha Fields singled home Brittany Thacker as the Grace College Lady Lancers held on for a 3-2 victory and a two-game sweep of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Friday.
The Lady Lancers (5-20) cruised by Rose-Hulman in the opening game 8-1, with pitcher Olivia Winget yielded six hits in a complete-game effort and helped herself out with a solo home run from the plate in the second inning. The win was Winget’s first collegiate victory from the mound.
Genevieve Benson proved dangerous from the plate in the opening game, hitting a pair of doubles with 5 RBIs, and Katie Clouse and Winget each finished 2 for 3.
“Our bats really came alive today, and our pitching kept us in the games,” said head coach Heather Johnson.
In the second game, the Lady Lancers jumped ahead with two runs in the third inning. Jordan McKinley loaded the bases with a bunt single, and Benson’s ensuing hit resulted in a fielding error, bringing in Fields and Thacker.
The Fightin’ Eng-ineers (9-13) tied the game with two runs in the fourth, and the score remained knotted at two apiece until the seventh inning.
Jordan McKinley gave up nine hits and two earned runs in seven innings, striking out three batters. She also finished 2 for 4 from the plate, and Thacker scored a pair of runs for the Lady Lancers.
The win snaps a 12-game losing streak for Grace and it will look to carry its momentum into a doubleheader today at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.
