Dan Scharlach, a senior at Carroll High School in Fort Wayne, has signed a letter of intent to attend Grace College in the fall of 1997. Scharlach, son of Don and Diane Scharlach of Huntertown, will play basketball for the Lancers.
Last year at Carroll, the 6-foot-6 forward led his team to a 17-4 record. Following a great season, Schurlach was named all-conference.
"I can play basketball and get a good education," Schurlach said of Grace. "Warsaw is a good community to play basketball because it is truly appreciated there."
Carroll High School head coach Rob Irwin said, "Dan is a good kid and a good basketball player. He is a super athlete and a good rebounder. He has only been playing varsity for two years, and is only going to get better as he gets to college."
"We're real excited about having Dan as part of our program," Grace coach Jim Kessler said. "I am impressed about two of Dan's characteristics. First, he has developed a very strong work ethic. He wants to get better, and is willing to work at it. Second, he has great athletic ability for his size. Dan comes from a winning program at Carroll, and his coach (Rob Irwin) played for me, so he will be familiar with our system."
Metz Signs With Tennis Team
Jon Metz, a senior at NorthWood High School in Nappanee, has signed a letter of intent to attend Grace College in the fall of 1997. Metz, son of Marc and Susan Metz of Nappanee, will play tennis for the Lancers.
Last year at Wanee, Metz recorded a 15-5 record. He was named All-Conference three years and was All-State Honorable Mention as a sophomore and a senior. Metz was named Wanee's Most Valuable Player all four seasons as a member of the varsity squad. He was team co-captain his final two seasons and recorded the most singles victories in 1994 and 1996.
Grace College coach Mike Grill says, "I think this young man has as much potential as anyone we have recruited in years. Jon has almost unlimited ability and will be a great addition to our program."
