Grace Offers Spring Art Encounters For Youth

The Grace College Art Department has announced the next classes in its Art Encounters program, open to all area youngsters grades kindergarten through 10th grade.Self-Portraits for Kids will meet Thursday afternoons, March 13, 20, 27 and April 3 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Many artists through the years have used the one model that is always available - themselves. Students will explore self-portraits by famous artists and use different media to make drawings, paintings and images of the unique individuals they are. Student masterpieces will be exhibited at the closing reception on April 3 from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

Art Around the World will meet Thursday afternoons, April 10, 17, 24 and May 1 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Students will explore the art of a different culture each week - drawing, painting, sculpting and creating their way around native America, Africa, Asia and Europe. A student exhibit of their masterworks will be on display at the closing reception on May 1 from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

Both classes will be divided into appropriate age groups and will meet at Mount Memorial Hall on the Grace campus. Six hours of instruction and all materials are included in the $49 tuition, and siblings can take $10 off.

Teachers for both classes are Leah Holst, junior art education major from Ndungukebbeh, the Gambia; Carmen Clark, junior graphic design major from Unalaska, Alaska; Tommi Sauder, freshman art education and graphic design major from Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Amy Keith, director from Martinsburg, Pa., and Taichung, Taiwan.
