WINONA LAKE -ÊThe Grace College men's soccer team won its tournament Saturday, defeating Cedarville 1-0 in the championship of the Grace College Invitational.
Junior Dan Ropte scored his first goal of the season in the 64th minute of action to give the Lancers the championship. Senior goalkeeper Jon Hoover picked up the shutout for the Lancers, his first of the season.
Grace entered the championship game following a 3-2 win over Moody Bible Friday afternoon in which the Lancers scored twice in the final four minutes of the second half.
Grace (2-1) will open conference play Wednesday at home against Goshen. Cedarville, which went 10-7 last year dropped to 1-1 on the season.

Manchester's men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 game to Adrian College Saturday. Scoring the lone goal for Manchester was Dan Krieg with an assist from Mark Overly. The Spartans are 0-1 on the year and host Albion College Wednesday.

The Grace College women's tennis team opened its season Saturday with a 9-0 loss to Bethel in conference action. The Pilots went to the NAIA Championships last year, losing in the second round (final 16). Bethel won all seven matches in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles for Sarah Mater over Deb Lasanen. The Lancers defaulted two matches. Grace (0-1, 0-1 MCC) will host Taylor at 3 p.m. today.

GRACE 1, CONCORDIA
Grace opened the season with a 1-0 victory over Concordia in Ann Arbor, Mich., last week. Sophomore Keri Kuchenbrod scored the only goal of the game with 15 minutes remaining in the second half. Sophomore Hannah Loss got the shutout, the 12th of her career. Grace, 1-0, will host Goshen today at 4 p.m. before going on the road for the weekend. The Lancers will play Northwood at 4 p.m. Friday and will travel to Alma Saturday for a noon game.

The Manchester College women's soccer team lost 7-0 Friday against Ferris State University. On Saturday, the Spartans fell to Alma College 4-0, dropping their record to 0-2 on the year. Manchester is in action again Friday as the Spartans host the two-day Spartan Kick-Off Classic, beginning at 3 p.m.

The Lancers dropped their season opener Saturday in a 6-3 loss at home to Bethel Saturday. Ben Myers won at No. 2 singles over Jamal Henry 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) and also teamed with Jason Michael at No. 2 doubles for an 8-2 victory over Henry and Nick Pulver. Grace (0-1, 0-1 MCC) will play at Taylor today.

manchester competes in Anderson invite

The Manchester cross country team traveled to Anderson University Invitational Saturday. The men's team placed seventh out of nine teams with a score of 143. Josh Combs placed 12th overall to lead the Spartans with a time of 27:48. The women were eighth out of eight teams with a score of 213. Erin Reep led the Spartans with a 33rd-place finish. The team will compete at IPFW Saturday.

The Manchester volleyball team traveled to the Kalamazoo Invitational Friday and lost in three sets to Milliken (15-6, 15-8, 15-10) and John Carroll (15-3, 15-4, 15-11). Saturday's action saw Manchester lose to host Kalamazoo in three sets (15-10, 15-6, 15-8). The Spartans then fell to Bluffton in four sets, 15-11, 9-15, 16-14, 15-8. Senior Emily Pilgrim was named to the All-Tournament team.
