Grace College Students Learn Tips For Landing First JobWINONA LAKE - Grace College junior and senior students learned Thursday night that first impressions count when getting hired for their first job.
Approximately 100 Grace College male and female students, and college faculty and staff, participated in an "Extreme Makeover: Graduate Edition" seminar at Westminster Hall, Winona Lake.
The seminar's purpose was to teach the students what's appropriate, attractive and affordable when it comes to personal style, hair and grooming.
Jon Yeh, Grace College fund director, came up with the idea for the seminar.
Yeh said a study conducted by York College, Pennsylvania, found how human resources directors and business professionals found graduating seniors lacked professionalism.
"I thought we could jump ahead of the curve and give our juniors and seniors career and professional advice for their internships and interviews for the professional market place before they graduate," Yeh said.
The seminar was hosted by the college's Office of Advancement and Office of Career Services to provide students with tips on the importance of appearance when applying for their first job.
Four models, two male and two female students, were selected by the college's advancement office to get free makeovers, and model appropriate clothing for interviews to approximately 100 Grace students.
Kim Roome, a Grace College senior youth ministries major, and Enrica Verrett, a junior counseling major, received free makeup and hair makeovers from Expressions Day Spa & Salon, Warsaw.
They worked with an image consultant to select business attire from Elder Beerman and Ruby to model during a fashion show.
The hair makeovers for the female students were provided by Jessica Popenfoose, a 2006 Grace alum and Expressions employee. LeAnn Garcia, Expressions makeup artist, provided makeup makeovers.
Roome said she has applied for an internship in Hong Kong, and feels she learned what is appropriate to wear to an interview.
"The makeovers helped me to be confident in how I look and what to wear to make a good first impression," Roome said.
Verrett said she plans on doing an internship in counseling, and she learned makeup techniques and how to dress professionally.
"I learned how to accessorize an outfit appropriately for an interview," Verrett said.
The two male student models, Kory Pruner, a senior math education major, and Josh Arnold, a junior Biblical studies major, received free haircuts from The Village Barber, Winona Lake, and modeled clothing from Male Fashions, Warsaw.
Pruner said he learned different types of clothing that are appropriate for professional settings.
Arnold said he learned the importance of making a good first impression in a job interview.
There were two sessions Thursday night, one for Grace female students, and one for Grace male students led by Nancy Nix-Rice, a fashion and image consultant and nationally-known author.
Nix-Rice instructed the students on proper attire to wear on job interviews, and proper appearance techniques.
