WINONA LAKE – On Sept. 29, Grace College hosted sixth-grade students from Jefferson, Leesburg, Madison and Claypool Elementary Schools.
The students participated in a day-long “Learners are Leaders” workshop based on topics chosen in partnership with former first lady Laura Bush. The informational day took place at Rodeheaver Auditorium on the Grace College campus, where students focused on three topics: literacy, bullying and living conditions in Afghanistan. Several community members led the discussions including Grace College elementary education students, DARE officer Doug Light and Sgt. Major Jim Houvener.
Following this educational event, 12 students from each school were chosen to meet Bush in person Oct. 6 for a group photo followed by a question-and-answer session. The sixth-graders enjoyed sharing their favorite books and genres and hearing from Bush about what she enjoys reading.
To round out the festivities associated with Bush’s visit, on Oct. 26, Dr. John Boal, chief of advancement for Grace College, and Professor Laurie Owen, dean, School of Education, presented the students with their picture with Bush. The sixth-grade teachers and principals received a copy of “Old Yeller” signed by Bush, as well as a picture for the school. The signed copy of “Old Yeller” will reside in each school’s library.
