Grace College Netters Blank Indiana TechWINONA LAKE – Grace College’s women’s tennis team shut out regional rival Indiana Tech 9-0 on Wednesday at Miller Athletic Complex.
The match was overcast and saw a brief sprinkling of rain at the onset, but the match was able to continue without delay.
The singles play for the Lady Lancers (9-4) was particularly dominant on Wednesday. The closest match was Jayna Huber’s 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles.
Natalia Kurkova won 6-3, 6-2 on the top singles court, and Jenna Jackson cruised 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Carrie Copeland only dropped two games at No. 2 singles, Molly Fitzpatrick lost one game at No. 4, and Gabrielle Lawrence had a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5.
In doubles play, Lawrence’s unblemished day continued with an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles, where she paired with Mariah Lewis.
Kurkova and Fitzpatrick also won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, and Copeland and Jackson battled to a 9-8 victory at No. 1.
“We played good tennis today considering the weather. We showed up ready to compete at the beginning and played much better tennis than we did yesterday,” said Grace head coach Scott Moore. “One more regular season match left for these seniors. I know Saturday will have a lot of emotions with it, but I’m so excited to see where these girls have brought our program today.”
The Lady Lancers will go for their 10th win on Saturday in the regular season finale against Saint Joseph’s. Grace has only won 10 matches in a season two other times in program history, most recently in 2009.
