WINONA LAKE – Senior Allison Kauffman has sparked Grace College’s women’s basketball team to a 3-0 start in the 2014-15 season. After a strong week, Kauffman was named the Crossroads League’s Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Kauffman powered Grace to a pair of road victories with averages of 24 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. The Lady Lancers knocked off IU-South Bend and Trinity Christian last week. Kauffman shot 90 percent from the free throw line and 48.3 percent from the field for the week. She had 26 points and nine rebounds versus IU-South Bend, who is receiving votes in the NAIA poll. The Lady Lancers continue play on Saturday with a home game against Indiana Tech at 1 p.m.
GIRLS SOCCER Freshman Abby Schue posted yet another shutout victory for Grace’s women’s soccer team to earn her third Crossroads League Defensive Player of the Week award on Monday. Schue, who was an All-League winner at the end of the regular season, helped Grace to a 1-0 victory over Huntington in the Crossroads League Tournament. She made three saves in 90 minutes, notching her sixth consecutive shutout to propel Grace into the tournament semifinals. Grace has not surrendered a goal with Schue as goalkeeper since Oct. 8. Grace will host St. Francis in Saturday’s semifinal clash at 3 p.m. at Miller Field.
MEN’S SOCCER At the conclusion of a nine-win regular season, Grace’s men’s soccer team placed two players on the All-Crossroads League Team in Jacob Cole and Trent Smith. Cole was named First Team All-League after yielding just three goals in Crossroads League play. The senior goalkeeper earned three of his four shutouts against league opponents and was the CL and NCCAA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 20. Smith earned a place on the Second Team All-League for the second straight season. The senior directed Grace’s midfield, tallying two goals with two assists. He also led the Lancers with 41 shots on the season. The Lancers are focused on qualifying for NCCAA Nationals for the third time in four years. Grace will need to qualify through the Midwest regional with games yet to be determined.
