WINONA LAKE - The Grace College men's basketball team opened the 2000-2001 season with a convincing 83-67 home win over Spring Arbor Tuesday.
Three Lancers scored in double figures, all freshmen playing their first collegiate game. Matt Abernethy, a freshman transfer, paced Grace with 24 points and 11 rebounds on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. He was also 8 of 12 from the line. Joe Saunders added 12 points in the win, while Chris Irwin chipped in with 11.
The Lancers only led 30-27 at halftime but opened the second half with a 10-0 run. Spring Arbor didn't get closer than 11 the rest of the way. Grace shot 53 percent from the field and outrebounded Spring Arbor 47-28.
The Lancers (1-0) will host the Optimist Tip-Off Tournament Friday and Saturday. The Lancers will play IU-Northwest at 8 p.m.
