WINONA LAKE - This Friday at 7:30 p.m. the Grace College Community Band will present their spring concert.
The concert will be held at Rodeheaver Auditorium, Winona Lake. The concert features the largest band in recent years. Sixty musicians will perform.
The program is titled "Stained Glass" Expressions in Sound. Conductor Martin Becker said, "The ensemble came up with the title because the music being played has so many different moods and styles."
The program will feature music written over a 200-year period of time. The program will begin with Rimsky-Korsakov's "Procession of Noble," and Anton Bruckner's "Hymn of Praise." The band will honor and dedicate the concert to former director Dr. James Chandler, who passed away in December. The concert also will feature both the trumpet and trombone sections in two great feature numbers.
The audience will be in for a surprise that involves everyone in the audience to interact with Eric Whitacre's "Cloudburst."
The band also will perform "With Each Sunset (Comes the Promise of a New Day)." Indiana composer Richard Saucedo writes in his program, "This piece was written in memory of Jack Hensley from Cobb County, Ga. Jack, a wonderful husband and father, unfortunately lost his life while working in Iraq in 2004."
The concert is free and there are no reserved seats. Doors open at 7 p.m.
