A Grace College sports standout witnessed her father's death in a three-car collision early this morning near Upper Sandusky, Ohio.
Eve Arthur, a sophomore at Grace in girl's soccer and basketball, was following her father, Robert Arthur, home for Thanksgiving. Her father joined her in Winona Lake Tuesday night to watch the Grace's women's basketball team play Purdue-Calumet. The Arthurs were traveling east on U.S. 30, 3 miles west of Upper Sandusky around 1:24 this morning.
A pickup driven by Jeremy L. Trautwein, 22, of Upper Sandusky, was westbound in the eastbound lane. Trautwein struck Robert Arthur's minvan headed east and forced it off the road into a ditch. Trautwein's vehicle came to rest in the eastbound lane, where it struck Eve Arthur's car.
Wyandot County Sheriff's Department reported that alcohol is believed to be a factor for Trautwein. Police are continuing the investigation.
Robert Arthur, 57, of Delaware, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Wyandot County Coroner. Eve Arthur, 19, also of Delaware, was taken to Wyandot Memorial Hospital. Trautwein was also taken to Wyandot Memorial, then flown to Ohio State University Hospital with serious visibile injuries.
It is reported that Eve was following her father and witnessed the first crash. She was then unable to avoid the pickup.
The Jaws unit was needed to extricate Robert Arthur and Trautwein from their vehicles.
