WINONA LAKE - The Grace College Art Department announced the next classes in its Children's Art Encounters program, open to all area youngsters in grades kindergarten through eighth grade.
Oil Painting for Kids will meet Thursdays, Nov. 8, 15, 29 and Dec. 6 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
The young painters will learn beginning methods of oil painting, coloring mixing, brush stroke methods and composition. They will explore the works of Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet, including participating in a reproduction mural of Van Gogh's Starry Night by the entire class. Student masterpieces will be exhibited at the closing reception on Dec. 6 from 5:30 to 6 p.m.
Teachers are Lindsay Rodriguez, senior drawing/painting and history major from North Webster, and Jesse Dompier, sophomore drawing/painting major from Eagle River, Alaska.
Drawing for Kids will meet Mondays, Nov. 12, 19, Dec. 3 and 10 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. In this six hour series, students will explore different drawing/sketching techniques in a variety of media including pencil, charcoal, crayon and marker. They will explore drawing from photographs and from real life. A student exhibit of their masterworks will be on display at the closing reception Dec. 10 from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Teachers for this class are junior art education major Leah Holst from Ndungukebbeh, Gambia, and Tommi Sauder, freshman art education and graphic design major from Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Both classes class will be subdivided into appropriate age groups and will meet at Mount Memorial Hall on the Grace campus. Six hours of instruction and all materials are included in the $49 tuition, and siblings can take $10 off. Take advantage of this great opportunity to give the kids a constructive activity while mom and dad complete holiday errands.
The Art Encounters series has been sponsored by the Grace College Art Department since 1995. The program offers quality art instruction for area youngsters while providing art education majors with additional classroom experience.
