Governor Appoints McGrath To Superior Court I BenchKarin McGrath was appointed Monday by Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb as judge of Kosciusko Superior Court I.
McGrath said she received a phone call from the governor Monday afternoon, and he told her he was pleased to appoint her as judge and confident she will continue to carry on with the same history of impartiality and integrity that Superior Court I is known for.
"I am honored and humbled to continue to serve my community in this new role as judge," McGrath said Monday as she was exiting the Justice Building where she was working in pretrial conferences.
McGrath ran for judge of Kosciusko Superior Court III, narrowly losing in the May 2020 primary to Chad Miner, who ultimately won the election and now presides over Superior III.
Kosciusko Superior Court I Judge David Cates died unexpectedly Dec. 9 in his Syracuse home from a heart attack. Cates was just coming off his first six-year term and had just been re-elected to begin his second six-year term. McGrath will serve six years under her new appointment by Holcomb.
After McGrath's Superior Court III run, she started her own private practice that focuses on children in need and family law. She also serves as a judge for Teen Court and was a deputy prosecutor for Kosciusko County from 2011-2018.
McGrath earned an undergraduate degree from Greenville College and a law degree from Valparaiso University Law School.
McGrath will be sworn in - as the first woman judge this county has ever had - at a date yet to be determined.
Others who applied for the vacancy included Kosciusko County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Hampton and local attorneys Lindsey Grossnickle and Douglas Lemon.
