Goksel Renews Contract with KCH

Following months of uncertainty and numerous letters of support, Dr. Musaberk Goksel will remain at Kosciusko Community Hospital, he said in a statement Wednesday.
Goksel will renew his contract with the hospital and remain director of the  Cancer Care Center. He was hired as a hematologist and oncologist more than six years ago and has seen hundreds, if not thousands, of patients in that time, according to hospital estimates.
“I feel truly honored and humbled by the community’s support and kind words,” he said in the statement. “It has been a joy to hear about my patients’ positive experiences at the cancer center.”
The Times-Union received more than a dozen letters beginning in late February from current and former patients of Goksel, many expressing concern at rumors that the doctor would not remain with KCH. They also praised him as a compassionate and knowledgeable physician.
Attempts to seek comment at the time from Goksel or the hospital  were not successful because contract negotiations prevented either party from commenting.
Goksel’s statement continues: “I have celebrated health success with many patients and their families, shared the joy of remission and grieved with those who have passed before us. I am grateful for the good communication we have been able to establish. It is a privilege that I will be able to continue to serve this wonderful community.”
Hospital officials also released statements praising Goksel.
“Dr. Goksel’s contributions in providing cancer care expertise has been remarkable. The KCH medical staff, board of trustees and administration are pleased to see Dr. Goksel remain in the community,” said Dennis Hively, KCH board chairman.
Stephen R. Miller, hospital CEO, said the hospital is delighted that Goksel chose to stay.
“We share the community’s opinion of Dr. Goksel, recognizing his unique listening style, his trustworthy manner and compassionate communication combined with his vast knowledge of treating his patients’ cancer and blood disorders,” Miller stated. “We are excited to expand our vision for community cancer care services, including oncology specialty access, cancer program enhancement and cancer care team development.”
A community reception will be held in May in conjunction with the annual Kosciusko County Relay for Life May 18 and 19. The reception will be May 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the KCH Cancer Care Center, and all of Goksel’s patients as well as community members are welcome to attend.
