A magazine carried the letter of a 17-year-old girl who is pessimistic about her future in these bleak days and years in our country.
She wrote: "The whole world is so messed up - just look at the news. Parents beating their children. Adults molesting and raping children. Kids on drugs, and terribly depressed. Our Generation X needs help. The X is almost the end of the alphabet. Does that mean we're almost to the end, and the end of the world is coming soon? Drug use and sexually active teens have always been around, but it's worse now than ever. Even middle school girls are having babies and abortions. It's terrible and wrong! Kids with guns in school. Bullies and gangs put fear in school kids.
"Is our generation being raised wrong? So many I know don't care about anything. For so many it seems that 'anything goes, as long as get what I want.' Something better should happen, shouldn't it? We believe in nothing. We trust no one but ourselves. Isn't there help somewhere? Tell us, please!"
Yes, dear girl, in many ways your generation was raised terribly wrong. You grew up to 17 at a time when parents who never grew up neglected to show and tell you the time-honored moral values necessary to maintaining and continuing a good life in a great country! They "did their own thing" in the 1960s. Songs like "I gotta be me," and "I do it my way" typified their selfish lifestyle.
But your letter is a call for help, and there is help. You mentioned the alphabet letter "X" as where life is for you. Move one more letter to "Y." Why am I? Why am I living? What am I living for? Who am I? Where am I going? Who created me?
The answer is God. We are created for fellowship with God and to live with and for Him. A quiet time alone in thought brings God very close, and alive to you, whether young or older, like me, a grandpa. You can find peace and purpose and joy with God, like nowhere else.
Then God's Son, Jesus, came to our world and asked us to follow Him. He showed the way with His life and gave promises which would bring joy and purpose to your life here on earth, and a home in heaven for you after this life.
The Holy Bible tells the story of God's purpose for you as you live here. You can have a joy from God that will overcome the problems you and your generation are seeing and experiencing today!
