Girl Scouts 'Visit' The World

Posted
NORTH WEBSTER - Madagascar, Philippines, Sicily, Tanzania, Switzerland and Panama are just a few of the 26 countries visited by 249 Girl Scouts and 95 adult volunteers from Indiana Lakeland Girl Scout Council's Kosciusko County membership Feb. 23 in celebration of World Thinking Day.

Each year girls participate in activities, games and projects with global themes to honor their sister Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in other countries.

This "Taste of the World" was conducted at the North Webster Community Building where these international travelers, ages 5 to 14, exhibited cultural displays of their chosen country. Each girl was then able to travel from country to country learning about what it might be like to live, play and learn in a different part of the world.

Troops also offered a "taste" of the culture in the form of a traditional food item for a small donation of 1 penny each; $159.19 in pennies was collected and donated to the Juliette Lowe World Friendship Fund.

Donations to this fund are used to support girls' international travel and participation in training and other international events. Donations also support the World Thinking Day Fund, which helps sustain efforts to encourage the development of Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting in new countries. Girls also participated in other activities, including a parade of flags and a friendship exchange.

Similar events took place in Noble, Whitley and Elkhart counties, areas also served by Indiana Lakeland.
