SYRACUSE - The warning to Wawasee's girls softball team came from coach Bo O'Dell during fielding practice.
"Quit going through the motions," he barked at his players before Thursday's game with Triton.
His players listened, taking care of Triton 10-0 in five innings. Triton, now 0-2, has been outscored 19-0 in those two games. Wawasee improved to 1-2.
One player definitely not going through the motions for Wawasee was starting pitcher Andrea Gingerich. The junior right-hander tossed a one-hitter, facing 17 batters and striking out 11 of them. Triton now has just two hits in its first two games.
The bottom five hitters in Triton's lineup went 0 for 9 with eight strikeouts.
Gingerich, 1-1, reached her career high in strikeouts by simply overmatching Triton hitters with her hard stuff.
"We told her to stay away from the changeup and to just go get 'em," O'Dell said. "It was the best control I've seen her have in her varsity career."
The one hit was even a fluke. Lead-off hitter Kristi Sechrist reached first base in the third inning when she hit a dribbler up the first base line. Gingerich fielded the ball cleanly, but when she threw the ball to first, she hit Sechrist in the back, allowing her to reach base as the ball trickled away.
The top four hitters in Wawasee's lineup hammered Triton sophomore right-hander Melissa Claxon, who took the complete-game loss. Freshman Dusty Krull, senior Sara Frantz, senior Megan King and senior Danielle Powell combined to go 8 for 12 with seven runs and five RBIs.
The Warriors, who led 4-0 after three innings, scored six in the fourth. King and Powell delivered back-to-back RBI doubles to the left-field wall in the inning.
