Adapted from the Disney television movie from 2006, "High School Musical" won an Emmy Award for outstanding choreography, a Billboard Music Award for soundtrack album of the year, and Teen Choice Awards for stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.
This is a modern version of "Romeo & Juliet" where rival groups, led by the handsome basketball jock and the beautiful math/science whiz, are challenged to audition for the lead parts of the "high school musical."
The presence of this original show has the promise of a fourth sequel, and is well promoted in teenage media and fashion markets. Here in Warsaw, Jake Klinkhammer stars as Troy (a role that made heartthrob Zac Efron a household name). Klinkhammer, a recent graduate of Drake University, is in his first season at the Wagon Wheel.
Returning for her second season, Mary Joe Duggan stars as Gabriella. Last year's audiences will remember her as Buddy Holly's wife, Maria Elena, in "The Buddy Holly Story."
Of special note is the casting from the community.
On May 23, the Wagon Wheel hosted auditions for students to be a part of the professional company in "High School Musical" and several other productions this summer. More than 150 children and teens from the area showed up for the event. Artistic Director Scott Michaels cast four high school-aged kids for the show.
Calling them, "Our Stars of Tomorrow," they are Henry Robison, 16; Cassie Dishman, 17, of Warsaw Community High School; Kristin Holley, 17, from Leo Junior/Senior High School; and Josh Zacher, 15, from Canterbury High School, Fort Wayne. Also, Warsaw Community High School Vice Principal Jennifer Shepherd will be featured in the role of Ms. Darbus, the drama teacher at East High.
After the show on July 3, there will be a dance party held next to the theater at 2517 E. Center St. This is for anyone ages 13 to 18 years old and the cast of Wagon Wheel's High School Musical. Admittance is free in conjunction with a paid ticket to the July 3 performance.
