There will be some pretty exciting new stuff in your Times-Union next weekend.
In the interest of making your newspaper more fun and informative, we are making some significant additions.
First of all, you will notice a slightly redesigned front page, touting our "Weekend" package, including quick weather forecasts for Saturday and Sunday.
(Since we will be launching "Weekend" over the July 4 holiday, you will get your first "Weekend" edition on the morning of Friday, July 4. In observance of the holiday, the Times-Union will not be published on Saturday, July 5. After next week, "Weekend" editions will be delivered on Saturday morning.)
You also will notice a fourth section on Saturday - a business section.
On the front of the section, you'll find a feature called "News To Use."
"News To Use" is the ultimate in useful journalism: a weekly page that delivers diverse, practical content that's relevant to your life. The page offers news and advice about personal finance, health and fitness, technology, home maintenance and lots more.
Inside, the section will contain the week's worth of local business news. It also will be the place to find state and national business news and news from Wall Street.
The section also will contain four pages of fresh stock market information.
The "Market in Review" will bring you a recap of daily winners and losers and weekly winners and losers in the NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ.
Tables will track most active stocks and volume surges in all three markets.
Also listed will be literally thousands of individual stocks from all three markets and a wealth of mutual fund listings.
We believe our weekly stock listing will rival that of any newspaper in the area.
Another added feature in the new "Weekend" Times-Union will be four pages of color comics.
The lineup will include "Peanuts," "For Better or Worse," "Baby Blues," "Zits," "Beetle Bailey," "Rose Is Rose," "Doonesbury," "Dilbert," "Mutts" and "Garfield," along with 10 other current favorites and classics.
Finally, look for expanded sports coverage in our "B" section, with more graphics and professional sports content.
The new features come in addition to all the material you're accustomed to finding in your Saturday Times-Union.
"USA Weekend," one of the top weekend magazines in the nation, will continue to be a part of the new package.
Our weekly television guide, "Spotlight On Television," the most comprehensive TV listings in the area, also will continue.
The NASCAR coverage in our "Home & Auto" section will continue as well, along with value-packed advertisements and preprints that will save you money on everyday and big-ticket purchases.
We hope readers and advertisers alike will enjoy the changes we're making in our new, improved "Weekend" edition.
The Times-Union is an independently owned newspaper. This used to be fairly common in the newspaper industry, but no more.
Most small dailies are owned by corporate chains. I have worked in both atmospheres.
Something that I have noticed about this newspaper is that the owners are very generous when it comes to content.
Compared to newspapers in similar sized markets, this newspaper offers readers much more.
The owners never have been stingy with newsprint and ink, and that translates into better value for readers.
Despite our best efforts to contain costs and retain value for readers, price increases are necessary from time to time.
The last time we raised the price for home delivery of the newspaper was three years ago.
The last single-copy price increase was nearly 10 years ago.
Effective July 4, single copy price for the expanded "Weekend" edition will be $1. Single copy prices Monday through Friday will remain at 50 cents.
Prices for subscribers will increase $1 per month - less than 5 cents per day.
We believe our new "Weekend" edition, along with our current lineup of news, sports, features and advertising throughout the week, offers some of the best value small newspapers have to offer.
We hope you agree.
