"Footloose" first appeared in 1984 as a film starring Kevin Bacon and became a favorite of teenagers who love music and love to dance.
The film tells the story of Ren McCormick, a teenager from Chicago, who moves with his mom to a small farming community in the Midwest where dancing has been banned. The film was loosely based on events occurring in Elmore City, Okla., where dancing was against the law for almost 100 years.
Because he loves to dance, Ren makes friends and enemies as he takes on the establishment. His efforts are complicated when he falls in love with the daughter of the local minister who preaches the evils of dancing. Ren is convinced that the only way to change the town is for the teenagers to band together to create their own dance.
"Footloose," the musical, opened on the Broadway stage in October 1998, running for 709 performances to mixed reviews. The music and cast were able to raise this show to award-winning status with Tony Awards in 1999 for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, and for its excellent dancing, Best Choreography.
