Gerald Edson Showalter, 85, Warsaw, passed away at 8:20 a.m. Feb. 3, 2014, in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw. He was born March 21, 1928, in Middlebury, to Noble L. and Edna May (Kauffman) Showalter. On June 26, 1948, in Goshen, he was united in marriage to Lois Maxine Cary, who survives in Warsaw. He graduated from high school in Millersburg, class of 1946. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. During his service in the military, he was on the Timber Bridge Committee and was an instructor on how to build and tear down bridges. He worked for Indiana Farm Bureau Hatchery, Goshen, as a general hatcheryman and fieldman. He then worked for Cobb Inc. as a hatchery manager with responsibility in feed mill and purchasing. In 1958, he transferred to Gainesville, Ga., to open up a hatchery. He became area manager in 1964 for production and sales for the southeast area. During this time, he was active with the Georgia Poultry Federation. In May of 1966, he joined Arbor Acres Farm Inc., Thorntown, where he was general manager and was responsible for 60 employees and supervised two leghorn salesmen for the same area. In November 1972, he joined Creighton Brothers, Warsaw, where he was in charge of egg processing which included managing Crystal Lake Egg Processing and Creighton’s Egg Packing Operation, retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church where he served as a past deacon and elder and he also was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Rotary Club. Also surviving are two children, Rodney (and spouse Cynthia) Showalter, Indianapolis, and Anne Showalter, Warsaw; two sisters, Charlene Christophel and Esther Deal, both of Goshen; two brothers, Glen (and spouse Rose Ann) Showalter and Dale (and spouse Janet) Showalter, all of Goshen; and a granddaughter, Casey Showalter, Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by a sister, Vesta Stroman; two brothers, Stahly Showalter and Jay Showalter, who was killed April 15, 1945, during World War II; and three brother-in-laws: Theron Christophel, Tom Deal and Albert Stroman. Services will be at a later date.
