BOURBON – Gerald Darwin Kuhn, 80, died April 28, 2011, in Highlands Regional Medical Center, Sebring, Fla. He was born April 15, 1931, in Bourbon, to Elmer and Hester Grosvenor Kuhn. On Oct. 6, 1962, in Gainesville, Fla., he married Maxine Barker. He received his bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Purdue University. He was on the faculty at the University of Florida from 1960-67. He joined the faculty at Penn State in 1967, where he retired as professor emeritus of food science in 1994. He was internationally recognized as an authority on food irradiation, processing and control practices in canning and freezing and quality management. He authored or co-authored in excess of 40 published research articles, more than 200 application publications, two books, numerous book chapters and traveled for professional reasons to Japan, Korea, Malaysia, England, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Canada and Costa Rica. In addition to serving two years as head of the Food Science Department at Penn State, he was a senior member of the Penn State Graduate Faculty, senator in the University Faculty Senate and on the University Academic and Athletics Standards Committee, past president of Gamma Sigma Delta and an IFT Fellow. He was head of the food science department at Penn State from 1992-94. He was past president of Bourbon Lions Club and the Bourbon High School Alumni Association. As president of the alumni association, he pioneered the establishment of the Bourbon High School Alumni Scholarship program. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1953-55. He was a member of Bible Fellowship Church. Surviving are his four children: Jeffrey (and spouse Janet), and Jill (and spouse Larry) Uceny, all of Plymouth; Gerald of Paradise, Calif.; and Patricia (and spouse Daniel) Doroschenko, Bellefonte, Pa.; five grandchildren; two sisters, Joan Fisher, Bourbon, and Sharon (and spouse James) Cumberland, Glasgow, Ky.; and two brothers, Luther, Bourbon, and Donald, Etna Green. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bourbon First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Bonnie Shoaf and Stormy Scherer-Berry officiating. A graveside service will be at a later date in New Bern, N.C.
