AKRON - George E. Wagner, 85, formerly of rural Miami County, died at 9:38 p.m. March 26, 2008, in Hickory Creek Health Care, Rochester, where he resided.

He was born March 5, 1923, in Miami County, to George H. and Nellie M. Teel Wagner. On June 11, 1944, in Macy, he married Normalene Fites, who died Oct. 21, 1997.

He was a farmer and sold school buses for Kerlin Motors, Silver Lake. He was a Gilead High School graduate. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church; Lincoln Lodge 523, Macy; Knights of Pythias, Peru; Scottish Rite, Fort Wayne; Mizpah Shrine, Fort Wayne; and a former member and president of the Rochester Community School Board. He loved woodworking and fishing.

Surviving are a daughter, Martha (and spouse David) Roberts, Rochester; a son, Stephen R. (and spouse Marlene "Gaye") Wagner, Macy; five grandchildren: Megan Roberts, Susan Mookhram, Nelson E. and Stephen G. Wagner and Tawnya M. Mason; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marjorie I. Wagner.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, CR 1100N and Meridian Road, Miami County, with the Rev. George Hapner officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Macy.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, with a Masonic Lodge service at 8 p.m.
