In Don Guard's recent letter, he referred to Robert E. Lee as "one of our most famous generals."
I have to assume that Mr. Guard is referring to the same Lee, a slaveowner, that led the Confederate forces in a war to keep slavery intact - a war which very nearly tore this country apart.
Mr. Guard's previous letters - and the mindset behind them - are suddenly much clearer now. It explains his unwavering support of George W. Bush, who much like Lee, is fighting a war he cannot win, and a war that should have never been waged in the first place.
I'll give Lee credit, though - at least he knew when to quit.
