Gene Pollock, 83, Warsaw, passed away at 4:05 a.m. Nov. 8, 2013, at his residence. He was born July 17, 1930, in Pierceton, to Harry Lemar and Helen Keplinger Pollock. On Oct. 23, 2012, in Warsaw, he married Carolyn Hyde, who survives. He served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 28, 1949, to Oct. 20, 1952. With scars on his face and shrapnel still imbedded in his legs from being wounded five times on the Korean battlefront, 20-year-old Sgt. S. Eugene Pollock was brought and honored before the Indiana House of Representatives Jan. 15, 1951. He was introduced by Rep. Frank O. Rarick of Warsaw as a member of the Fifth Regiment of the First Cavalry Division, having engaged in hand combat with Red troops three times. He was wounded in two separate encounters – the communist troops left him for dead at the second one in November because he “played possum.” His injuries required six hospital stays and, following this honor by the state representatives, he left for the hospital at Camp Atterbury for further surgery on his wounded leg. For his bravery and courage, he was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation ribbon for being a part of the First Cavalry troops who fought their way out of a Communist trap in North Korea, the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Korean Campaign Badge and the Japanese Occupation Badge. He worked in maintenance in the Whitko Community Schools system for 22 years, retiring in 1993. He then was employed by Warsaw Auto Exchange. He was a member of the American Legion Pierceton Post 258 and was past president of the Warsaw Eagles. Also surviving are four sons, three daughters, six grandchildren and a half brother, Herb (and spouse Harriett) Dahlquist, California. He was preceded in death by a son, a daughter and two sisters. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, with Pastor Bob Brown, God’s Highway to Heaven Church, Warsaw, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw. Military honors will be conducted by Pierceton's American Legion Post 258. Calling is from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. ***** Memorials to Department of Natural Resources.
