MENTONE - Genavee Nelson, 93, of 111 Harvard St., Mentone, and formerly of Shorewood Estates 166 Owl Drive, Rochester, died at 5:10 a.m. March 12, 2009, in her daughter's residence.
She was born Sept. 25, 1915, in Akron, to Lee and Cora Zechiel Moore. On Dec. 28, 1943, in Rochester, she married Harold D. "Macy" Nelson, who passed July 20, 1979.
She lived with her daughter in Mentone for 11 years. She was a teacher for 35 years, teaching at Akron, Mentone, Etna Green and Rochester's Riddle Elementary, retiring as a second grade teacher in 1979. She was a 1933 Akron High School graduate, attended Manchester College where she got her certification and received a master's degree from St. Francis of Fort Wayne. She was a member of Mentone United Methodist Church, where she served as historian. She enjoyed painting and golfing in her younger years. She loved to travel and read. She was a member of the Mentone Reading Club, Psi Ota, Retired Teachers of Fulton County and the Indiana Reading Association.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandra (and spouse Roger) Moriarty, Mentone; a grandchild, Stephen (and spouse Jenny) Moriarty, Rochester; two great-grandchildren, Molly and Grady Moriarty; and a daughter-in-law, Judy Nelson Coplen, Fort Wayne. She was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Nelson, who passed June 3, 1973; a sister, Zelda Bell; and two brothers, William and Clair Moore.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone, with the Rev. Doris Smith officiating. Burial will be in Mentone Cemetery.
Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
