I am writing about the marriage protection bill that is sitting idle in our state house.
It is such a paradox to have to write about a bill that was written to protect traditional marriage. But the truth is, our culture demands protection of an institution that has been the mainstay of human history.
Twenty years ago, only 1 to 2 percent of the population considered themselves to be homosexual. As cultural views have changed through such things as the influence of the media, through politics, and through more access to pornography on the Internet, those numbers have increased.
The characteristics of men and women, despite what modern teaching would tell us, are set in our DNA. All one has to do is observe children at play, to see the differences. Boys tend to play side by side, immersed their building blocks, or their trucks and trains. Girls are more face to face. They are more conversational in their play as they "care" for their dolls, or stuffed animals. Boys and girls, uniquely different and yet perfectly suited to one day be partners in love, marriage, and child rearing.
Women by nature are the more nurturing, and are typically more emotionally connected to their family and friends. When watching her children play, a mother is on guard and looking for accidents that could happen, while a dad is usually more interested in the adventure and the amount of fun his children are having. And yet, both sexes are at one in the need to protect their homes and their children. It is the way we are wired as human beings, and no amount of propaganda is going to change the fundamental differences between men and women in most of our minds.
We live in a time, where admittedly, there are problems. Fifty percent of marriages end in divorce. Crime, even among children, is on the rise. Respect for authority and those things once considered worthy of defending, are sadly fading with each generation. A further attack on the family is the last thing we need. We have lost our moorings and we are so involved in our own daily lives and activities that we are hardly aware of the fact that as a state and as a nation we are set adrift. If we are not careful, all that we truly hold dear will be lost.
Our great nation was intended to be a government by the people and for the people. But if people refuse to be involved, our democracy will become a dictatorship. Special interest groups - who are involved, and the politicians they support, will tell us what we think and what we want. They will make the decisions for our communities, our businesses, our churches, our schools, and our homes. I wish I was wrong, but I'm not.
If in your mind and heart, marriage between one man and one woman is worth defending, then please contact Representative Scott Pelath and ask him to give SJR7 - Indiana's marriage protection bill a hearing. Then, contact your local representatives and tell them to lead the fight to protect marriage.
