Gatke Cleanup Could Begin After Jan. 1

Work on the former Gatke property, off Winona Avenue, Warsaw, could begin after Jan. 1 if a grant is approved by the Indiana Department of Commerce.

Warsaw city planner Jeff Noffsinger told the city's Redevelopment Commission Monday that the target date for notification of grant approval is Dec. 1. The grant request, which was submitted Oct. 1, is for $300,000 and is accompanied by a loan request of $150,000.

If approved, the grant would allow the city to begin demolition on the property and to begin cleanup of the brownfield area. Noffsinger said he is "pretty confident" the grant will be approved.

The property is owned by Kosciusko County, and has delinquent taxes of approximately $300,000 due, Noffsinger said. The county has agreed to forgive the taxes and deed the property to the city of Warsaw, which plans to clean up the property and sell it to a business. Noffsinger would not specify what company has expressed interest in the area.

In other business, the commission agreed for Noffsinger to contact an engineering company to draft a legal description of the area north of Sofamor Danek. The city plans to bring that area into the Tax Incremental Financing District in 2002.

Redevelopment Commission members are Charlie Smith, Robert Steele, Jerry Kralis, Tammy Rockey and Neal Carlson. Rockey and Carlson were absent Monday.
