GOSHEN - For the Wawasee Warriors, frustration must be setting in.
Goshen beat Wawasee 73-62 in the consolation game of the Goshen Holiday Tournament.
At 0-8, the Warriors are off to what is believed to be their worst start in school history.
That said, Jerry Davis still feels he can keep his team motivated.
"If we can take the offense we had tonight, and add the defense we had in the Riley game, we can be a pretty good team," he said. "We've got to continue to play with confidence and stay positive. We are not playing 0-7 basketball."
No, now they are playing 0-8 basketball.
The consolation game seemed to be a battle to prove who wasn't the worst team in the area, or for the that matter, in the always tough Northern Lakes Conference.
Both teams scraped through a tough first half to enter the locker room knotted at 38.
With the score tied 6-6 in the first quarter, the Warriors put together a 12-point run that included three three-point shots, two by Jeremy High and one by Chris Lambert.
The run ended with just over two minutes to go in the quarter, and then control of the game changed. Goshen put together an 8-2 run that cut Wawasee's lead to seven.
Goshen would chew on the Wawasee lead before bringing things even at the end of the half.
The Warriors shot the ball decently in the second half, but their defense was suspect at best.
The Redskins would turn Wawasee miscues into points, converting three turnovers into eight points.
Goshen was not without its faults, either. The Redskins turned the ball over three times in the third quarter, but when it counted most, Wawasee could not get the job done.
The Goshen lead stood at nine at the end of the third.
Too many mistakes in the fourth prevented any hope of a Warrior comeback. Wawasee committed four straight turnovers midway through the final frame.
When Wawasee did close in, its defense couldn't come up with enough key stops. Trailing late, the Warriors went with the old standby in an effort to get back in the game: they fouled to stop the clock.
But the Redskins were up to the challenge, as they hit 6 of 8 free throws to seal the win.
