I want to express my appreciation and praise to Lauren Fisher on her recent letter to the editor (Sept. 8, 2009) regarding youth involvement and education in the political process. Her letter was well written and directly addressed the most critical step to become a contributing member of our American Society; in a word, education.
Of all the freedoms we espouse and support, there is none greater than our freedom of speech, and her method of writing truly exemplifies that freedom. With this in mind, I was also extremely pleased to see her tie this directly to our other great right and responsibility, the voting process.
That being said, Lauren's letter was a beacon to me and filled my heart with hope for the future. Her generation, which includes my children, will be well served to continue to pursue open dialogue and seek information from the innumerable sources available. That Lauren would be open to hearing our president further gives me hope that we can begin the process of civility and compassion for those whom we are called to serve.
I have one wish for Lauren; continue writing and by all means exercise your rights. These civil liberties must not be trampled; they must be kept and exercised regularly. My hope is that you will continue to be an active member of our American society. I look forward to reading your well-written, succinct and richly meaningful journalistic materials in the Times-Union. I would also encourage you to pursue a scholarship from the Kosciusko Community Foundation as I believe your letter has provided a bright beacon for the future of this county, and our country. You deserve to be recognized and I would hope that your efforts would be rewarded through some form of scholarship.
I applaud you for taking a stand and expressing yourself so clearly. You are the future and with this vision, the future is bright! Bravo, Lauren! Encore! Encore!
