Third- and fourth-graders at Lincoln Elementary School Monday afternoon were treated to a visit from an early-1700s fur trader. The trader, a Scotsman named Jacob McLinden, was portrayed by reenactor Kevin Stonerock (R). The visit was made possible through the Honeywell Educational Outreach Program. Stonerock told the students about how McLinden became a fur trader, his travels and the dangers he faced. He explained that canoes used in the trade were 24 to 36 feet long and could carry 1-1/2 to 3-1/2 tons of furs and equipment. He started the program by walking to the front of where the students were sitting and singing a Scottish tune. He discussed how the French lost control of the fur trade in the Americas after losing the French & Indian War to the British.
