South Whitley Elementary students and their families raised $2,565.09 for firemen injured fighting a fire in August. The Injured Firefighters Fund will benefit Dan Porter, Doug Kessie and Preston Bolinger, who suffered burns in a fire Aug. 19 at the Farmer's Exchange Tavern in Larwill. A fourth fireman, Jeff Sammons, was killed in the blaze. To raise the money, students, staff and bus drivers participated in a penny war Oct. 6-10, depositing their change into empty firemen's boots. The daily winner was the class with the most pennies. South Whitley fifth-graders collected the most pennies for the week. Principal William Hoppus said the fund-raiser was "well above our expectations." Pictured are (L to R) Steve Weber, Marlene Mishler, Clint Hatton and Martha Trier. Photo by Gary Nieter, Times-Union
