The VanKampen family is pictured participating in the first challenge of building a fire to melt water in a pop can during YMCA’s Mission To Mariner Adventure race on Aug. 25. Teams made their way from the current Y facility on Smith Street to the future home of the Y at the end of Mariner Drive. They had many challenges to complete along the way including the fire building, wall climbing, riding a bike obstacle course, food tasting, and canoeing and paddle boarding. The YMCA had 38 teams who participated. The event was a fundraiser for the new YMCA that will be built on Mariner Drive and U.S. 30.
