SYRACUSE - Fire and EMS departments from as far away as Pittsburgh, Pa., are joining the Syracuse Fire Department in selling symbolic T-shirts to help raise money for the public safety personnel in New York.
And T-shirts are being ordered from across the nation.
While the Syracuse Fire Department is filling the orders, other local departments taking orders now include the Tri-County Ambulance Service, Nappanee, the Etna Green Fire Department and Multi-Township EMS. A spokesman for the Syracuse Fire Department said efforts are being made for the Pittsburgh Fire Department to get involved as well as fire departments from other parts of the country.
He said orders are three to four days behind and are being filled as quickly as possible.
The Syracuse Fire Department still wants other area fire departments to join in the effort.
"This is something we'd like to see as many fire departments take part in as possible," said shirt designer David Butler, Syracuse, last week. Local fire departments can contact the Syracuse Fire Department about helping sell the shirts and raising money.
The Syracuse Chamber of Commerce also is helping in the endeavor.
The shirts are white and red and the art work is symbolic. The shirt reads "One Nation Under God" with the date Sept. 11, 2001.
For each shirt purchased for $10, $7.50 will go toward helping the public safety personnel. Shipping is $3.50 for the first shirt and $1.50 for each additional shirt.
The idea behind the shirts was that of Gene and Peg Kitson. By other fire departments helping with the shirt sales, organizers hope a significant amount of money can be raised.
