Editor, Times-Union: Frontline Manufacturing in Leesburg has applied to IDEM for construction of new emission units for one of their manufacturing processes. This permit is for units that will emit air pollutants.
In times past the smell of the Fiberglass operation could be detected all over the town of Leesburg. Since then that odor has gone away and I really don’t want it to come back. I remind everyone that if you can smell it you are breathing it. You are actually experiencing particulate contamination in the air. The town of Leesburg has already suffered enough pollution from the old GTI building that was once declared an EPA Super Fund site. We don’t need to endure the stench of Fiberglass wafting over the town on a daily basis to say nothing of its extreme close proximity to Leesburg Elementary School.
In agreement with others that I have discussed this issue with, I am pro-business but anti-pollution. There are currently two notices, one dated 7/23 and one dated 7/27. The 30-day window for public comment to IDEM is rapidly coming to pass for the requesting of a hearing on the matter. There are a couple of us who have expressed our desire for a public hearing to IDEM in time and I am aware that our town board was also informed in a timely manner but have so far decided to sit on their haunches ... ahem, I mean take it under advisement.
I’m as guilty as the next guy of glossing over the small print public notices in the Times-Union. Perhaps I should start paying more attention. Regardless of the “30-day window,” if you’re concerned about air pollution and the health and welfare of your family then voice your opinion to IDEM by calling, faxing or writing a letter requesting a public hearing to remonstrate this permit application.
The public notice can be found by typing Frontline Manufacturing in the Public Notices search window, on the Times-Union website.
