Friendly Fowl

Juergen Voss, owner of Open Air Garden Center, adopted 'Ducky' last July after its mother was killed on the road. Ducky was about three days old. Voss kept the little duck in his garage at nights and in the backyard during the summer, where it liked to play in the pool. The duck learned to fly, but refused to leave. Now Voss keeps the duck at the garden center on Old Road 30W. The duck follows Voss around wherever he goes and won't go outside unless Voss does. Ducky, who Voss calls his 'guard duck,' has a penchant for untying the shoelaces of garden center customers. That's why Voss' shoes have hook-and-loop fasteners. The only other problem Voss has encountered so far is Ducky's taste for the tender, juicy roots of pond plants at the garden center - at $20 per plant. Photo by Gary Nieter, Times-Union
