SYRACUSE - An 18-year-old from Syracuse died Friday night when the car she was driving ran off Hatchery Road and struck a tree.

Laura N. Leamon suffered head injuries in the 10:48 p.m. accident, which occurred south of CR 1000N near Syracuse. She was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 11:55 p.m.

According to a Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office report, Leamon was eastbound on Hatchery Road when she lost control of her car for an unknown reason. The vehicle traveled onto the right shoulder of the road and then went left of center before going off the road and hitting a tree. The impact was at the driver's side door of the car.

Alcohol may have been a factor in the accident - Leamon's blood-alcohol level was .04 percent, according to the accident report.

Assisting at the scene were personnel from the Department of Natural Resources, Syracuse Fire Department, and Syracuse and North Webster emergency medical services.

Leamon's obituary appears on Page 3A of today's edition.
