Free Speech Or Racism?

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

I was unfortunately not surprised to see the relics of Indiana's violent racist past and present recounted in your News Views column this morning. But I was quite surprised to see you attribute your unwillingness to publish the photo in question to your publication's unwillingness to be "associated" with violent racist imagery. This hypothetical hand-wringing fails to address your complicity in promoting racial intolerance through your "Letters to the Editor" section.

Mr. Gerard, surely you can make no claim to being "above this" when it comes to promoting violent racist beliefs in Warsaw. Serving as an almost-daily mouthpiece for the founder of the White Aryan Resistance, by publishing the racist rantings of a man found liable in a court of law for inciting racists to murder two visiting Ethiopian students in Oregon, surely you can make no claim of being "above this."

I propose that you find yourself "of this" or even perhaps "beneath this" since you promote racist violence, ostensibly in opposition to your stated personal beliefs, purely to sell extra copies of your newspaper. Until you cease printing the letters of Tom Metzger, you are no more "above this" type of outdated bigotry than he is.
