Free Flu Shot Clinic Benefits ManyThe Northern Indiana Hispanic Health Coalition (NIHHC), Walgreens, Bowen Center, K21 Community Health Foundation, Grace College and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Warsaw joined forces to provide critically needed flu shots to the community of Warsaw on Sunday.

With outreach coordinated by Times-Union, Warsaw Community Schools, NIHHC and Father Tino at Our Lady of Guadalupe, Walgreens and Bowen Center were able to provide much needed flu shots to community members in Kosciusko County.

Flu shots were administered to over 70 people, including children over the age of 4. Shots were offered free to uninsured patients regardless of race, with no appointment or doctor’s referral needed. Majority of the patients that were given flu shots on Sunday were Hispanic, according to a news release from NIHHC.

Staff and volunteers braved the extreme cold throughout the day to serve the community. Their dedication and passion allow us to provide these vital resources to those who need it most, the release states.

Joanne Mickley, director of nursing at Bowen Center, was able to help administer flu shots to various children under the age of 11 and stated, “I am just so glad that we didn’t have to turn anyone away from receiving their flu shots today.”

There are more than 404,000 Hispanics in Indiana and almost 70% do not have health care coverage. As the population continues to grow, more community members will be left without coverage, facing significant barriers to care. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has hit the Hispanic community particularly hard, it is extremely important to receive a flu shot, according to the release.

If you were unable to attend the event but are in need of a flu shot, call 574-206-3938 to assess your eligibility for a flu shot voucher.

The Northern Indiana Hispanic Health Coalition’s mission is to provide preventative health care programs to the communities of Elkhart, Kosciusko, Noble and St. Joseph counties through education, advocacy, physician referral and research, so that they may lead healthier lifestyles.
