Free Comic Book Day Is Saturday

Posted
For the ninth year, Chimp’s Comix & Video Games is taking part in the national Free Comic Book Day Saturday.
Free Comic Book Day occurs the first Saturday in May each year. Participating comic book shops around the world give away comic books for free to anyone who comes into their stores, according to the official website at www.freecomicbookday.com
This year, Free Comic Book Day coincides with the release of the Marvel movie “Thor”, which will be released Friday.
Nick Kelley, owner of Chimp’s, 919 E. Winona Ave., Suite 4 & 5, Warsaw, said each person that comes into his store will get two free comics. For each non-perishable food item a person brings in, they can get an additional comic. The food items will be donated to the Salvation Army.
“If you bring 60 items,” Kelley said, “you get 60 free comics.”
Free Comic Book Day is from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. Kelley said there are 65 free comics to choose from this year. Thirty-one are new this year. Twenty-three are all-ages comics, with 13 being new for this year. The all-ages comics coincides with Chimp’s new all-ages reading section.
All the comics are graded based on their age appropriateness.
“We have about 1,000 comics to give out this year,” Kelley said.
Some of the all-ages comics include Mickey Mouse, Sonic, Captain America & Thor, Young Justice & Batman, Dark Crystal, Kung Fu Panda and Smurfs. A few of the teen comics include Green Lantern, Spider-Man and Star Wars. There are comics for all ages, from kids to more mature readers.
“Those are some of the highlights for this year, the new stuff,” Kelley said.
Chimp’s also will have a big sale Saturday. The sale will include 50 percent off comic back issues, 20 percent off graphic novels and “buy 4, get one free” DVDs. Magic® Booster Packs will be sold at $3 each.
A Magic® tournament starts at noon Saturday. It is a pre-release for the next new set of Magic, Kelley said.
Come in costume Saturday, have your picture taken and be entered into the costume contest. The costume contest will be judged by Chimp’s fans on Facebook. The prize will be a Chimp’s Comix surprise prize pack. Anyone, from children to adults, may enter the costume contest. For more information about Free Comic Book Day or Chimp’s, e-mail questions@chimpscomix.com or visit the website at www.chimpscomix.com
